FOR OVER 18s ONLY!!!
Who are you?: I am Nigel Dower, Chair of Aberdeen for a Fairer World and reside in Bridge of Don.
What is your Fairtrade item?: I am no connoisseur of wines, but about eight years ago I went to a Co-op Fairtrade wine tasting evening and was introduced to this Shiraz from South Africa – and have liked it ever since (it’s a joke in AFW (Aberdeen for a Fairer World) that on social occasions someone says ‘We need to get some Shiraz for Nigel!’.) Its description as ‘spicy and brambly’ seems on the mark – as someone who like brambles I can recognise that – at any rate it’s a well bodied wine which is neither too sweet not too dry – good with meat.
Why?: At a modest £6 it is no plonk and to me shows that taste is not being sacrificed for being ethical. Another good one I was recommended at a more recent Fairtrade wine tasting in Bridge of Don was a Fairtrade Malbec.
Wine producers across South Africa and South America face unique economic, social and political challenges. From the legacy of apartheid in South Africa and low market prices in South America, farmers are exposed to an unpredictable future.
More than 50 manufacturers and plantations work with Fairtrade to make quality wine that makes a difference to people’s lives.
