RIGHT OF THE WEEK

Article 23 (children with a disability)

A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and, as far as possible, independence and to play an active part in the community. Governments must do all they can to support disabled children and their families.

Last week the news reported on a horse and ‘chariot’ taking wheelchair users onto the beach at St Cyrus, Aberdeenshire. This type of action is allowing disabled children to live a full life with dignity and helps makes progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 10 ‘Reduced Inequalities’. There is a similar project at Balmedie Beach where you can hire a specially-designed all-terrain wheelchair from the Sand Bothy Café.

Unfortunately, a month ago, the bunker used by the group who provide this (Balmedie Beach Wheelchairs) was vandalised. This type of behaviour wastes money which could be spent on more equipment or facilities. Thankfully this hasn’t stopped the group and if you

want to book one of the all-terrain wheelchairs call 07864 350989. You can also help by volunteering with the group and this will allow even more people to benefit from the wheelchairs.

There are other groups who help achieve article 23 in Aberdeenshire such as Grampian Disability Sport who are launching a new Powerchair Football Club, Enable, Archway and Charlie House’s monthly activities club. For more information on these groups please use the links below.
