Pupils get on their bikes at Bridge of Don Academy

Bridge of Don Academy and Active Schools have been selected to receive funding from the UK sustainable transport charity, Sustrans as well as an additional £1,500 from the Youth Activities Small Grants Fund.

The money received has allowed the school to invest in 10 new bike lockers and cycle stands as well and 28 new scooters. On top of this, 40 helmets were purchased through the Cycle Scotland Cycle Friendly School Award.

To celebrate the occasion, Bridge of Don Academy hosted a launch event on Tuesday 29 May. There was a variety of activities for the pupils to take part in including a “Smoothie Bike” which required the children to pedal to make their own smoothies and a series of introductory sessions to help the pupils get familiar with the new scooters.

The event was attended and opened by local Councillor, Sandy Stuart.

Active Schools Coordinator for Bridge of Don and Dyce, Samuel Main said:

“We are over the moon to have received such a great amount of funding from these charities.

“The equipment we have been able to purchase will be a great incentive to encourage the pupils to jump on their bikes in the morning and cycle to school instead of getting a lift in the car.

“It’s so important for children to take part in regular exercise from a young age. We are excited to make an occasion out of the launch and see our new scooters and lockers get put to good use.”

Councillor Sandy Stuart said:

“Charities like Sustrans and the Youth Activities Small Grants Fund play a significant role in promoting the benefits of keeping active amongst children.

“It is wonderful to see this sort of funding make its way into our local community. The resources it has provided for Bridge of Don Academy will hopefully create a wider influence that gets everyone on their bikes this summer and beyond.”
