RIGHT OF THE WEEK

Article 5 (parental guidance and a child’s evolving capacities)

Governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents and carers to provide guidance and direction to their child as they grow up, so that they fully enjoy their rights. This must be done in a way that recognises the child’s increasing capacity to make their own choices.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) makes three direct references to parental responsibility (articles 5, 18 and 27). Parents/carers should always consider what is best for children and governments should help parents/carers do this by providing support. The UNCRC is 30 years old and to mark this, David Beckham looks back over his life and mentions how his parents helped him on his journey by supporting him.
